Description of Divorce Coaching
DIVORCE COACHING is a process of helping divorcing individuals clarify the important issues they wish to have addressed in the settlement. Clients are better prepared for meeting with their attorney and can focus on the issues more clearly, having already dealt with the emotionally-charged issues. An added benefit is that a Divorce Coach is skilled in thinking outside of the box, bringing creative and expansive perspectives to the issues which can open up possibilities for crafting options that might not otherwise be considered.
Divorce Coaching originated in the field of Collaborative Law; and is practiced by Mental health Professionals trained in the principles of Collaborative Law. The practice is based on the set of beliefs that Divorce need not be an adversarial process, and that settlements can be reached respectfully and peacefully between the parties given appropriate professional guidance. Divorce Coaching is available regardless of whether you are or not pursuing a Collaborative Divorce.
Divorce Coaches work with clients helping them learn strategies for managing their emotional reactivity so that they can focus rationally on pursuing their interests in the settlement. Neuroscience research has taught us that humans are very similar to animals in their reactions to stress, the Fight or Flight or Freeze response to threats is activated. When any of these three responses are activated, the "thinking brain" becomes disengaged and discussions are unlikely to be productive. The goal is to reduce emotional reactivity and re-engage the "thinking brain" to rationally and realistically consider issues needing to be resolved that will have long-term effects on the adults and the children. |
